MTM Training

Training and Skills Development

The Minnesota Transportation Museum offers more than great experiences in history and exciting rides on our exhibition Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway. MTM is a center for learning and skills development. We have opportunities to learn and practice skilled trades such as machine shop operations, welding, sheet metal working, large engine rebuilding, woodworking, and more.

MTM also offers a range of trainings in railroad operations, such as for brakemen, conductors, and locomotive engineers that are approved by the Federal Railroad Administration. Participation in MTM trainings gives you knowledge, experiences, and certifications to qualify to volunteer on our exhibition railway, and that can help you in the job market. For more information, check out the links below or send a message to [email protected].

Proffessional Training at MTM

SMTM offers training that prepares you to work as a volunteer using a wide range of skilled trades at the Jackson Street Roundhouse. If you're interested in learning how to rebuild a locomotive or engine, restore historic rolling stock, operate large equipment in a machine shop, or become FRA certified to work on a railroad, MTM is the place for you. Please contact our training supervisor at [email protected].

Venture Scout Program for Youth and Young Adults

Venturing is an inclusive program through the Boy Scouts of America for males and females aged 14-20 (or 13 and completed the 8th grade). It's operated through Venturing Crews, units of youth and advisors that meet on set schedules and plan activities and events for youth like you!

The Minnesota Transportation Museum sponsors a Venture Scout program focused on railroading. Participation in the program offers young people the opportunity to learn all about the history of railroading and opportunities in the industry today. It also offers opportunities to engage in learning activities at the Jackson Street Roundhouse and on the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway. For more information please send a message to [email protected].

Job Corps Program at Jackson Street Roundhouse

Job Corps is a voluntary program administered by the United States Department of Labor that offers free-of-charge education and vocational training to young men and women ages 16 to 24.

At MTM, participants learn a range of skills to help them in their workforce development. They also learn the ethics and values of work and the responsibilities necessary to be successful in the job market.
